First, Harrisburg Mall and Swatara Twp. police issued a traffic advisory about the grand opening of Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World at 8 a.m. today, at the height of morning rush hour.

Now the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is warning motorists to expect heavy traffic, especially on Interstates 83 and 283, state Route 441 and Paxton Street. Commuters are encouraged to avoid I-83 between Exits 43 and 48.

The Capital Beltway Service Patrol will work extra hours to assist motorists with disabled vehicles today. PennDOT's Incident Management Response Team also will be available. PennDOT will use the Highway Advisory Radio, at 1610 AM and message boards to inform motorists of congestion and alternate routes.

The opening days of other Bass Pro Shops have drawn between 50,000 and 60,000 people, company spokesman Larry Whiteley said.

Harrisburg Mall has 4,223 parking spaces, mall manager Mark Nobile said.
